On 25th April 1974 the MFA (portuguese army) revolted against the regime. The army took the radio stations and played musics as a signal. It was supposed to use the Zeca Afonso’s “Traz Outro Amigo Também” (“Bring Another Friend Too”; his musics were censored by the regime) but his song “Grândola, vila morena” was used instead. Only one person died when the PIDE started to shoot.
The soldiers used carnations flowers in their guns and tanks. That’s why it’s called the Carnantion Revolution, and that flower is a symbol for freedom in Portugal
